2008 WINTER ARRIVES

Mr. Handyman Tri-County Shares Insight on How to make your Home more Energy Efficient

Local handyman business offers tips to local residents on how to stay warm and energy efficient

Wayne, NJ (Grassroots Newswire) Jan. 25, 2008-- As the cold weather begins to set in and stay and the price of oil and derivative products continue to escalate, keeping your home warm for the winter is becoming an issue of concern. Mr. Handyman Tri-County, serving homes in Passaic, Essex, Bergen and Morris Counties offers local residents tips on how to save on heating costs now…and for years to come.

"Unless you are fortunate to live in a newer energy efficient home, making several investments or changes around the house can significantly alter your heating bill. Not only will taking these steps help the environment, but it will strengthen the nation's energy security," said Bob Palmarozza, owner of the company.

According to Palmarozza, the following simple tips will help make your home more energy efficient.

·        Insulate and seal. Add an extra layer of insulation to your roof or walls, and use caulking or other materials such as weather stripping to seal cracks around windows, doors and electrical outlets. Put window film over older, single pane windows. This will help prevent heat from escaping outdoors.

·        Keep cold air out. Put an insulating blanket or cover over pull down attic stars or attic access panel to keep the cold unheated attic air from seeping into your home.

·        Maintain an efficient heating system. Have it serviced once every two years and never try to repair it yourself. If it has a filter, clean or replace it every month during the heating season.

·        Turn down the thermostat. Turn down the thermostat every time you leave the house for two or more hours, and every night before you go to bed. Also, you can install a programmable thermostat that can be set to turn the heating system up or down at pre-set times.

·        The sun is your friend. Take advantage of the sun during the day by opening up your curtains. This will allow the sun to naturally heat your house.

·        Upgrade your appliance. Installing Energy Star products can make your home more energy efficient and save you money.

"In today's day and age, there is no reason to not be more energy conscious. At Mr. Handyman tri-County, we're dedicated to helping local residents make their home as energy efficient as possible,"  Palmarozza said. "It's important to understand the overall effect it can have on the environment – and your wallet."
